Unit 8 Lesson 2 Quiz in Google Classroom

Unit 8 Lesson 2 Quiz

Hey guys, here are some helpful hints when completing your lesson 2 quiz. Keep working hard and if you have any questions on the quiz, please email me. Don't forget to watch the digital lesson and use the online book as a resource.

1. p. 471 - Kepler has 3 laws of planetary motion. The first law (ellipse), placed the sun at one of the foci of the ellipse and that planets orbit the sun in a deformed circle called a ellipse.
The second law (speed) found that at a planet's aphelion, the orbit speed is slower and at it's perihelion, the planet is moving faster. The third law (time) the farther a planet is away from the sun, the longer it takes to orbit the sun.

2. p. 471 - Refer to Kepler's 1st law of planetary motion.

3. p. 474 - Centripetal force is a inward force that causes an object to move in a circular path.

4. p. 475 - Read the section about solar nebulas (which is a inward pull of gravity in balanced by the outward push of gas pressure in the clouds. Scientists think that an outside force caused the solar nebula to compress and then to contract under its own gravity.

5. p. 473 - Look at the sample problems at the bottom of the page to help solve this problem. M=Mass, d=distance, and F= force of gravity exerted by 2 bodies.
Newton's law of universal gravitation says that the force of gravity (1.) increases as the mass of the objects and (2.) decreases as the distance between the objects increase.

Unit 8 Lesson 1 Quiz in Google Classroom

Unit 8 Lesson 1 Quiz

I have had some questions about the lesson 1 quiz. Please read this before completing the quiz on think central. Once you have completed the quiz, I will post the grade.

1. Concentrate on the 2 early models and beliefs: geocentric model and the heliocentric model.
Geocentric model - Earth is the center and all the other planets including the sun rotate around it
Heliocentric model - Earth and the other planets orbit the sun

2. A parallax - apparent shift in the position of an object when viewed from different locations. The closer a star is, the larger their parallax will be. See the attached picture. AU is known as Astronomical Unit. It is a type of measurement.

3. Aristotle thought Earth was the center of all things. His model placed different objects moving in small and large spheres in circles.

4. Galileo used a powerful telescope to view celestial objects. He observed the moons orbiting Jupiter. These moons are known as Galilean satellites. His observations showed that Earth was not the only object that could be orbited.

5. Copernicus figured out what causes the year and seasons on Earth.
Earth's rotation on its axis causes day and night
Earth's revolution around the sun causes the year and seasons

Please keep asking questions. I know this is all different trying to do this at home.
