Welcome to Poth Junior High and 6th Grade Math!

This is going to be an exciting year!!  Here are some important pieces of information about my class.

Course Content:  Students will learn the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) outlined for 6th grade mathematics.  The curriculum will prepare students for the 6th grade State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) in mathematics, as well as for future math classes.

Supplies:      On a daily basis, students will need:

  • 100 count spiral notebook
  • Math folder
  • pencils
  • red pens
  • wide-ruled paper

Evaluation:  Grades will be taken on a variety of assignments, with the six weeks average calculated as follows:

Quizzes …………..…………………………………..20%

Daily Assignments...................................................... 40%

Tests............................................................................. 40%

Homework:  Homework is considered an important part of this course.  In most cases, students will begin work assignments in class, and will finish them at home.  Each student has been provided guidelines for completing homework.  Incomplete or sloppy work will not be accepted; work must be shown in order for assignments to be considered complete.  Students will have class notes and examples to refer to for help with their homework.  Tutoring is available from 7:30 A.M. to 7:50 A.M., Tuesday through Friday, for students who need more assistance.  If students fail to turn in their work completed and on time they will receive a detention after the 4th late or missing assignment.

ABSENCE WORK POLICY:  Absences allow the student one day to make up work for each day absent or an equitable arrangement with the teacher. It is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements with the teacher to do make-up work. A grade of “0” will be recorded for work or assignments not turned in. Students with extracurricular and co-curricular absences are to get assignments from their respective teachers BEFORE they leave. ARRANGEMENTS FOR MAKE-UP WORK ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT AND ARE TO BE MADE BY STUDENTS WITH TEACHERS AFTER ANY ABSENCE.

Late Work Policy:  Students are expected to complete and turn in all assignments within the timeline set by the teacher.  Work turned in after due dates will be penalized with the maximum points awarded as follows, with possible points further deducted based upon the quality of the work.

1 day late-  20 points off

2 days late – 30 points off

3-5 days late – 50 points off

6+ days late – not accepted

Consequences: Students who fail to comply with the classroom or campus rules will receive the following consequences:

 Step 1: Warning

Step 2: After school detention (Detention will automatically be assigned to any student who misbehaves for a substitute teacher)

Step 3: Parent contact

Step 4: Office referral

*Note – Depending on the severity of the offense, progression may be modified in order to issue the best fit consequence for the action.

Online Learning (if needed):  We will be using a few different sources for this.  The main resource that we will use will be Google Classroom.  This resource will be used as our notes and resource page.  This is where information will be sent out and students will find what work needs to be completed for each day.  As a parent, you have the option to be linked to their google classroom so that you can manage and see what your child is doing.  If you leave your email address below, I will add you to our online classroom.

Mathletics is a website that we use for reinforcement of the skills that we learn in class.  This website will be used in a variety of ways and the work done on here will be completed for a grade.

Conferences: My conference period is from 12:26 - 1:15 P.M. I welcome the opportunity to visit with you about your child, and ask that you please contact me in advance so that we can schedule a time that works for both of us. You can reach me by phone at 484-3323 or by email at [email protected]

I know that this year will be full of new things and exciting things.  I am looking forward to all the great things that are to come!
